What Can and Can't Go in Your Skip?

Are you planning a home renovation in Stanway, a garden clearance in Wivenhoe, or a construction project in Colchester City Centre? At EA Waste, we make skip hire simple. However, to ensure your waste is recycled responsibly and to avoid unexpected surcharges, it’s important to know exactly what can—and cannot—go in our skips.

Following industry-leading standards , we’ve put together this local guide for our North Essex customers.

✅ What You CAN Put in Your Skip

Most general, non-hazardous waste is perfectly fine. We accept:

  • General Household Waste: Paper, cardboard, plastics, old clothes, and general "black bag" rubbish.
  • Garden & Green Waste: Grass cuttings, leaves, hedge trimmings, small branches, and wood.
  • Construction & DIY Waste: Bricks, rubble, hardcore, concrete, tiles, and ceramics.
  • Metals: Ferrous and non-ferrous metals (e.g., copper piping or steel beams).
  • Furniture & Fittings: Old kitchen units, bathroom suites, and wooden bed frames.
  • Empty & Dry Paint Tins: We only accept tins that are 100% dry and free of liquid residue.

⚠️ Restricted Items (Additional Charges Apply)

Certain items are classified as "specialist waste" by the Environment Agency. We can take these, but they must be declared at the time of booking because they require separate processing:

  • Upholstered Furniture (POPs): Due to new laws on Persistent Organic Pollutants, items like sofas, armchairs, and office chairs must be handled separately.
  • Mattresses & Tyres: These items are difficult to recycle and incur a per-item surcharge.
  • Fridges & Freezers: Must be degassed at a specialist facility.
  • Plasterboard: This cannot be mixed with general waste. It must be kept 100% separate (usually in a dedicated skip or bag) to prevent the release of toxic gases.
  • Carpets & Roofing Felt: These are classified as "bulky waste" with specific disposal fees.

❌ Strictly Prohibited (Prohibited Items)

For the safety of our Colchester drivers and to protect the Essex environment, the following items are strictly banned:

  • Asbestos: Highly hazardous; requires a specialist removal contractor.
  • Batteries: Particularly Lithium-ion batteries (found in laptops and vapes), which are a major fire risk in our trucks.
  • Gas Cylinders & Extinguishers: Pressurised containers can explode during the waste crushing process.
  • Hazardous Liquids: Wet paint, solvents, oils, fuel, and chemical cleaners.
  • Medical Waste: Including needles, dressings, and clinical waste.
  • Electrical Items (WEEE): TVs, monitors, microwaves, and large appliances.
